SCCM Client Version – 2023/10/12

We compile a list of SCCM client versions, build numbers and cumulative updates since the 2012 RTM release.

SCCM Upgrades are released 3-4 times a year. After an SCCM Upgrade, it’s important to upgrade your SCCM Client version to the latest version.

Cumulative updates are cumulative, meaning that the latest one includes the previous one. (Ex: You don’t need to apply CU1 if you plan to install CU2)

Once you apply a cumulative update, your SCCM version on the site server itself will not change. The site server will show the latest major SCCM release (RTM,SP1,R2). However, the new SCCM version numbers will show on your Consoles and Clients.

We recommend that you upgrade all your clients when you are applying the latest SCCM version. We release a step-by-step guide on how to update your SCCM server each time a version comes out. Just use the link next to the client version in the table to be redirected to the upgrade post.

Legend

This is the info alert box for sharing…info.

  • CU : Cumulative Update
  • UR : Update Rollup
  • IR : Interoperability update
  • FW : First Wave
  • Baseline : Version that you can use to upgrade SCCM 2012 or install a new site. Always use the latest available baseline for these scenarios.

Why your SCCM Client version is important

Knowing which client version you are running in your environment lets you benefit from the SCCM (MECM) latest features. If you update your site to the latest build version but you are not updating your SCCM clients, you may not enable all features.

Use the search function to find your exact client version. If you don’t know how to find your version, jump the table and read our section about how to get your version.

How to get your SCCM Version Number

SCCM Client Version Report

Running a report to see your client version is the easiest method. You can see all available versions in a single report.

We have built an SCCM Client version report to give detailed information about your SCCM client version in your environment. Using this report, you’ll be able to easily identify which client version is outdated.

SCCM Client Version Report

From the SCCM Console

You can also get your site version number from the SCCM (MECM) console

  • Open the ConfigMgr console
  • Browse to Administration / Site Configuration / Sites
  • Right-click on the site and select Properties
  • You’ll find the site version and build number
sccm client version numbers

To see all client version from the console :

  • Open the SCCM console and navigate to Assets and Compliance / Devices
  • In the devices view, right-click on the header and select Client Version

You can also use the Client Health Dashboard to list your client version :

  • Open the ConfigMgr console
  • Browse to Monitoring / Client Status / Client Health Dashboard
  • You’ll see the Client Version Details chart
sccm client version

Create an SCCM Client Version collection

You can create a collection to list your client version in your console. Here’s the WQL Query that you can use :

You just need to replace your Client version at the end of the query

select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System where SMS_R_System.ClientVersion != 'SCCM CLIENT VERSION'

We also created a script that creates more than 100 Operational collections that include all the latest SCCM Client versions:

You can download the script on my Github repository.

It would be useful to include a column to indicate whether or not each version is considered to be a baseline or not.

Hello; I have a doubt; I have the version: SCCM 2012 R2 5.00.7958.1000 installed in a Windows 2012R2 operating system, can I update that version of SCCM to 1710 without any problem ?, the update map would be 1. Upgrade to SCCM 2012R2 SP1 2. Upgrade to SCCM 2012 1710 Thanks for your help and comments

Benoit Lecours

Yes. You need SP1 first and 1710 after but the 1710 update was only showing in 1610+ console a couple of week ago so you might have to go SP1 -> 1610 -> 1710. Sorry I can't test that right now.

Can I go 1511 straight to 1710? or do I need to upgrade to something in the middle first?

Benoit Lecours

12.18.2017 AT 07:14 AM
In theory, you can (since it's cumulative) but for now, 1710 update will show only on 1610+ console. So your best bet is to go 1706 first and then 1710.

What about migrating from an old server with 1511 to a new server with 1702?

I is there a way of rolling back a SCCM upgrade? Recently upgraded to 1706, this have broken a number of things. We do not get the early wave hotfixes, and was told not add them in production, but we don't have a lab to test. All help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately no. You'll need to restore from backup.

Our environment is on SCCM 2012 1706. Every device we have in the windows family either shows Windows NT Server or Workstation. Is this normal? Is there a way to show the actual operating system? Any help will be appreciated! Thanks

The OS information you're talking about is discovery information. This information comes from Active Directory. To have the full name of the OS you'll need to check in the v_gs_operating_system view.

Hi Benoit, great article! I have SCCM 1606 and I want to upgrade to 1702 but in the console under "Update and Servicing" I have also 1606 Hotfix, 1610 and in the end 1702. Can I run 1702 directly or I must pass throught all upgrade in sequence? All upgrades prerequisites (including 1702) are passed. Thank You so much. Luca

Benoit Lecours

Updates are cumulative. You can install 1702 directly which will include all other fixes.

Hi Benoit. Great article! We are currently on SCCM 1606 5.00.8412.1007 and planning to get to 1710. I understand we will need to update to 1706 first. My questions are will we have any issues updating the client agents from 1710? Do we need to update the client agents on 1706 first and then again on 1710? Are the SCCM 1606 5.00.8412.1007 agents compatible with 1710?

Hi, We currently have SCCM 2012 RTM (5.00.7711.0000) installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2. After purchasing a number of Windows 10 PCs, we have noticed that the current SCCM build is not supported and therefore cannot be installed on these W10 PCs. I have two main questions: 1. What is the best path of updates that I should follow? 2. Does the licence cover upgrades to Service Packs and Cumulative Updates? Thanks in advance, Jose

Benoit Lecours

11.28.2017 AT 02:49 PM
You'll need to go to 2012 R2 SP1 or 2012 SP2 first and then go to the latest Current Branch version (actually 1710). We have both upgrades documented : https://systemcenterdudes.com/sccm-2012-r2-sp1-upgrade/ https://systemcenterdudes.com/step-by-step-sccm-1710-upgrade-guide/

Hello, I'm pretty new to administration of SCCM. The primary site was setup prior to me getting involved. I'm on SCCM2012 1511. For some reason when I go into the colsole>administration>cloud services>Updates and Services, there is no content in the ribbon at all. Nothing to manually check for updates, the only thing available is "Saved Searches". Is there something that needs to be set up further to allow in console updates? Any direction would be really appreciated!

Hi James, It seems to be related to rights within SCCM. Look under Administration/Security/Administrative Users as a start. hope this help a bit 🙂 Jonathan

Steve Windows Server 2012R2 or later is required for the latest version of SCCM.
