The product itself can be complex for inexperienced administrators. There’s already tons of SCCM 2012 R2 Installation Guide available, written by experienced blogger and MVPs but I think that very few gives the whole picture from the start to the last component. Our goal is to bring it a bit further, explaining concepts and best practice rather than just guide the user through the installation process. We was hesitant to post this SCCM 2012 R2 Installation Guide because SCCM VNext is coming pretty fast (Release date could … Read More

Create Custom Reports with Labels of Asset Intelligence

Nicolas PilonAsset Intelligence, SCCM, SSRS8 Comments

Usually, we use information from Add Remove Programs when it’s time to make software reports. For technical reasons, it’s not always easy to have adequate results. The use of custom labels in Asset Intelligence helps standardize and gather software information. In this post, we will explain how to use the data from custom labels in asset intelligence to create custom reports. Before starting the reports, make sure the custom labels are set in your environment from how to maximize the use of custom views in Asset Intelligence. Configuration Manager 2012 came with a couple of Asset Intelligence reports but nothing special based on the custom labels. The only useful report is Software 12A | Software titles with a specific custom label defined. After this post, you will be able to do a report like the one below. SCCM 2012 Secondary Site Installation

Benoit LecoursSCCM2 Comments

Determining if you need a Primary Site, Secondary Site or only a Site System Role (MP,SUP) in your SCCM hierarchy can lead to confusion. This post will focus on the Secondary Site installation. What is exactly his role ? A Secondary Site controls content distribution for clients in remote locations across links that have limited network bandwidth. It’s always child site of the Primary Site and it’s managed though the SCCM console. To determine if you should install one, read the Technet documentation or follow Kent Agerlund (Enterprise Client Management MVP) rules of thumb : Install a Secondary Site only if one of the following statements is true : The remote location is between 500 and 5000 clients Needs to compress traffic going to the site Needs to control the upward flowing traffic Needs a local Management Point Needs a local Software Update Point If you’re still convinced that it’s the right option, follow this … Read More

SCCM 2012 Migration Account Permissions for 2007 Hierarchy

Benoit LecoursSCCMLeave a Comment

Each time I’ve done an SCCM 2012 migration from 2007, someone asks “How do I give access to the migration account?”. Looking at some blogs and technet you can read that the account requires : Read & Execute Access to the SCCM 2007 Database Full Access to the SMS Provider Read access to all objects Fine but how do I do that ? I decided to do a step-by-step guide : In the CM07 console, navigate to Site Database > Security Rights > Users > Right Click Manage ConfigMgr Users and follow the wizard. In the user name tab, add a new user your Source site Account Give the computer account read permissions to the CM07 site class and on all instance (***If you plan to perform DP Sharing / Upgrade you need to add modify & delete). The account will need read permission for each object type you want to migrate. (Collection, Package, Operating … Read More

sccm query imported computer

Benoit LecoursSCCM, SQL, SSRSLeave a Comment

This sccm query imported computer might be helpful to know which user imported a specific computer. You add a new computer directly to the SCCM database by calling the ImportMachineEntry Method in Class SMS_Site. This can be used to deploy operating systems to computers that have not yet been discovered automatically by SCCM. You can view this information in the Status Message Queries and search for MessageID #30213. But this query will target only the information you need. You can use this query to create a report or directly in SQL MS. This query won’t work to create a collection since it’s SQL language. select CASE smsgs.Severity WHEN -1073741824 THEN ‘Error’ WHEN 1073741824 THEN ‘Informational’ WHEN -2147483648 THEN ‘Warning’ ELSE ‘Unknown’ END As ‘SeverityName’, smsgs.MessageID, smsgs.Time, smwis.InsString1 as Username, smwis.InsString4 as ComputerName, smwis.InsString5 as MAC from v_StatusMessage smsgs join v_StatMsgWithInsStrings smwis on smsgs.RecordID = smwis.RecordID join v_StatMsgModuleNames modNames on smsgs.ModuleName = modNames.ModuleName … Read More
